Torus

Animation

A shiny blue torus moves and rotates with music. The torus has freehand writing on it's surface. How was it made?

What's a Torus?

A torus is like a tube which meets at both ends. A torus looks like a donut with circular inner and outer radii.

The diameters of two circles can define a torus. Define a torus with the diameter of the width of the tube and outer perimeter of the donut.

The tube width defines the diameter of the tube, as if that tube were wrapped in a circle and joined at two ends to look like a donut.

The outer perimeter becomes the outer diameter of the torus. In other words the outer perimeter represents the diameter of the entire donut. The outer diameter plus tube diameter define the torus' inner diameter. The inner diameter's the donut hole.

How Was It Made?

The torus was prepared with Photoshop's default 3D objects, with color and handwriting added to the texture.

Seven Thunder Software's free 3D Translator, at the Microsoft Store, converted the Photoshop DAE file to a set of arrays for WebGL. The arrays, with normals and shader lighting, were applied with WebGL to create the interactive highlights.

The torus (donut) displays light, shadow, and shiny highlights in response to movement, with GLSL (OpenGL Shading Language) WebGL shaders. Shaders calculate light and shadow based on the torus' current orientation and normal data.
