A color wheel is an abstract illustrative organization of color hues around a circle, which shows the relationships between primary colors, secondary colors, tertiary colors etc. (Modified quote from Wikipedia)
Color wheels help artists and designers determine color schemes used to grab attention, express moods or direct composition. Colors directly opposite each other on the wheel are considered complementary. Colors adjacent to each other on the wheel are analogues.
Use complementary colors carefully. They draw attention and often jar the eyes. Analogues set a mood based on their location on the wheel. For example blues and greens are often soothing, however reds and oranges often tend to generate excitement.
